Two is better than one when it comes to business.

Things have been a little hectic lately which is why I haven’t written a blog post in about a week. I have been doing a lot of research online and in the books I found at the local library. Some pretty interesting stuff I must say. ūüôā

However, I am very excited to announce that I have a new partner for Simply Sparkled Events. Meet Stephen Barnes!

Stephen and I have been best friends for four years and are basically a real life Will & Grace. We met while we were both attending East Tennessee State University. He was a Biology major while I was a Mass Communications major. ¬†We have backpacked through Europe together, road-tripped to many cool places in the US and are currently roommates in the awesome city of Las Vegas. ¬†Our hobbies include eating tacos, napping, quoting “Titanic” and talking about boys.

After a discussion over some very cheap coffee (because that is what adults do right?),  he told me he was very interested in joining me on this business venture and I was very excited to hear this. It will make things a lot less difficult when it comes to finances. He has an extensive business background and is very good when it comes to design.  He will definitely be an asset for sure.

We are currently at 246 days until we officially want to launch.  That means 246 more days of learning, growing and researching. A lot needs to be done by then but I am nonetheless excited.

I landed a serving job this week to help bring in some extra income to help with the cost of marketing materials and such. I am also hoping to attend some bridal conventions that will be coming to Vegas in August and October, and I found out the hard way that those are not cheap.  We gotta work for what we want though right? Yes!

My least favorite word. Budget…..

Day 3:

If you are like me, you don’t have a secret trust fund stashed away and no matter how much it hurts, you realize you are never going to find out you are really a princess. ¬†Well shucks…..*cries into Doritos bag*

So what that means is that when you decide to take the big leap and open up your own business, you are going to spend hours upon hours crunching numbers in your head and on paper.  I have been shaking my head A LOT today.  However, the good news is I have nine months to save up so I am not feeling too defeated.

Another good part is that I don’t have to worry about renting a space since it will be home based. ¬†This makes me happy because I can’t imagine how much it would cost to rent a commercial space in Las Vegas. My apartment rent is high enough.

After doing a little bit of research I learned that my main costs are going to come from business licenses, insurance, lawyer fees for drawing up contracts and marketing materials.  Plus I would love to take some courses in event planning to get some accreditation and attend some bridal expos to get some insight on trends and such.

I am currently looking to work two jobs to make this happen. I am on the lookout for a side serving/cocktail waitress job. To be honest it has been a hassle more than anything. I have 7 years of restaurant experience yet nabbing a serving job in Vegas is like trying to become an astronaut it seems like. I have a few more interviews though so fingers crossed I get one soon!

I am willing to do whatever it takes to one day become my own boss. My motto is hustle hard in my 20’s (what’s left of them at least) and I can thoroughly enjoy my 30’s and so on.

I currently don’t have any tips on budgeting because to be real, I am absolutely terrible at it. My method of budgeting is called “out of sight, out of mind”. I basically find a secret hiding place to stash it. It works but not in the way you think. I usually end up forgetting about it after a couple of weeks/months so it just gets lost forever. Sigh. Yes, people consider me a legal adult. Shocking I know.

Here is another tidbit of wedding trivia I found out today. According to folklore, the real reason the groom carries the bride across the threshold is to protect her from the evil spirits lurking below.  However when I get married, I plan on getting carried into a Taco Bell so the only spirits I will have to worry about are the hungry ones.

What’s in a name?

Day 2

Hello loves!

Well….one of the hard parts is over. I finally picked a name for my future business! I went over many options in my head and finally made a decision……

SIMPLY SPARKLED EVENTS

 

I chose this name because I feel that it kills two birds with one stone. It explains my personality a lot. I love the simple things in life yet I always find a way to add a little sparkle to it.  It also allows my potential clients to see that I am very flexible, whether it be planning a very small event or an over the top event, I will be able to add a little sparkle and shine to each one.

After doing some research I have figured out the do’s and don’ts when picking a name for your business.

 

  1. Show your personality! Owning your own business allows you to be super creative. Let your name show your true colors not hide them.
  2. ¬†Be unique! As the talented Judy Garland said, “Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of someone else.” In other words, don’t Google popular business names. Sit down with a piece of paper and just have a creative brainstorm. Pick a name that will be fun and memorable.
  3. Showcase your services! You want to make sure that your business name fits with what you are offering to your customers.
  4. Keep it short and sweet! Ever looked at a long paragraph and decided to just skim over it? If you make your business name super long, this may happen to you.
  5. ¬†Make sure the domain name is available! From what I have heard, Trademark Infringement is not a fun thing. Don’t put money into a website or marketing materials before making sure the name isn’t already registered or protected, especially if you both are offering the same services.

I am going to end this post by giving you a little bit of wedding trivia I learned today. Did you know that Saturday is actually the UNLUCKIEST day to get married according to legend? It is very ironic considering that it is one of the most popular days to get married.

Well it is time to  eat my delicious lunch/dinner that my friend treated me to. Yummy Panera Bread. Sometimes you just need a grilled cheese and some warm broccoli cheddar soup to brighten your day up!

Following a dream. Am I crazy?

Well I have decided that I am taking the plunge. I am saving up to start my own business! Yes I slightly feel like a maniac but they say the most passionate people are the craziest. Right?  I feel like my life is made up of many risky, compromising moves so why not add another one to the list?

I am starting my own wedding/event planning business. It is something I have wanted to do since the early years of high school. It is the main reason I chose to go down the path of Public Relations/Marketing in college. It is the reason I have offered to plan so many events for FREE (yes, many people thought I was nuts). I have learned that this is what I could truly see myself doing for many years. ¬†Isn’t that what life is about? Following your dreams.

After losing what I thought was my dream “big girl job” in the world of corporate database marketing, I was hit with doubt, uncertainty and loss of motivation. I didn’t know where to go from there. I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. It made me do a lot of soul searching within myself.

It made me realize that I do not want to be chained to a desk the rest of my life. I do not want to work under someone else until I retire. I am aware I will have to work another full time job to keep the business afloat, however my long term goal is to be successful enough to solely rely on wedding/event planning as my main source of income.

Is it risky? Of course. I could lose money and completely strike out. But the best things in life are worth the risk.  My goal is to have my website and business fully launched in January 2018. This gives me nine months to plan, save, plan, and save. Did I mention save? :p

So let this be known as DAY 1. Day 1 on what I know will be a very long journey. I am sure some days will be a struggle, however I am as motivated as Rocky Balboa was when he fought Ivan Drago (sorry I am a movie nerd).  I started by going to the local library today and basically cleaning out their wedding section. As you can see I went a little crazy but I am prepared to research as much as I can. I had to show off our Golden Girls candle as well, a gift from our friends Cara and Brett. I am obsessed with that show!

I am looking forward to this journey. If anyone has any thoughts/tips/advice, I am open to all suggestions. I want to learn as much as I can. Follow me though this journey. It makes it a lot easier with good friends by your side. Tell me about a time where you took a leap of faith and how it made you feel. Looking forward to hearing back from you!
